Hereditary cataracts (HC) affect the eyes of a dog, and over time lead to vision degradation. Unfortunately, the potential for their treatment is unfortunately quite limited. HC is a fairly common pathology among many various breeds, and some carriers can be found among the Staffordshire bull terrier too. And just like in the case with L2HGA, the fact that HC is not so common in SBT anymore, it shouldn't be a responsible reason to stop DNA testing. Otherwise, we could get much more of it very soon in upcoming generations. HC is not the only eye problem common in the breed, so it is highly recommended to complete an in-depth screening for other ophthalmological changes. More on eye screening HERE
Please note that not all DNA tests for HC determine it in Staffordshire bull terriers particularly. The selected test must detect SBT-type of HC.
