Symptoms of L2HGA in different cases
L2HGA is a severe neurometabolic pathology that occurs when both dogs' parents are carriers and the dog has inherited two copies of the gene. The symptoms of L2HGA can be very varied and include seizures, spasms, ataxia, and abnormal changes in behavior, including stereotypies and compulsive behavior. Affected dogs tend to lose body control at least partly in time. Besides severe symptoms, which significantly affect a dog’s life quality, the tragic part of the disease is the fact that it’s not curable. Fortunately, today even carriers of this disease among Staffordshire bull terriers are quite rare to find: the breed community has done an excellent job removing carriers from the breeding. However, this does not mean that testing for L2HGA is not needed anymore - on the contrary, it is absolutely essential not to let it appear more often again. Carriers of L2HGA are commonly found precisely in those lines where testing has been neglected for several generations in a row.

Hereditary cataracts (HC)
Hereditary cataracts (HC) affect the eyes of a dog, and over time lead to vision degradation. Unfortunately, the potential for their treatment is unfortunately quite limited. HC is a fairly common pathology among many various breeds, and some carriers can be found among the Staffordshire bull terrier too. And just like in the case with L2HGA, the fact that HC is not so common in SBT anymore, it shouldn't be a responsible reason to stop DNA testing. Otherwise, we could get much more of it very soon in upcoming generations. HC is not the only eye problem common in the breed, so it is highly recommended to complete an in-depth screening for other ophthalmological changes. More on eye screening HERE
Please note that not all DNA tests for HC determine it in Staffordshire bull terriers particularly. The selected test must detect SBT-type of HC.

Is SBT the right match for you?
Despite all our love for SBT, we have to admit all breeds have their cons - it’s not avoidable. It remains to make sure that none of these cons are a red flag for your family and that you and your dog will become the right match.
Character of SBT
Each dog is an individual with its character and features, but breed representatives share many traits in common.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy?
Nowadays there are many ways to get in touch with a reputable breeder. One way would be through your local Kennel Club and Breed Club, or by your own research and social media. However, the most promoted litter might not always be the most tested or wellbred. Remember to carefully research such topics as health testing in SBT, learn the chosen line features and parents temperament.
What is an average price for a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy?
Average prices may vary depending on your location and chosen breeder, but usually they are somewhere between 1500 eur. and 2000 eur.
Reputable breeders always have pedigrees for their puppies and do not charge for them more. For the breeder, ordering the pedigree costs about 20-30 eur. per puppy. If the pedigree is absent, there must be a reason for it like lack of dog’s Kennel Club registration, individual restrictions from Kennel Club, not done tests or other requirements.
What is a Staffordshire bull terrier character like?
It is hard to be sure what character your future puppy will have when he matures. This can be influenced by many factors: genetics, lifestyle, socialization and training, individual experience with the world, and even health. But overall SBT can be described as high drive all-round dogs, bold, fearless, and passionate lovers, who know for sure how to enjoy this life and to get the most out of life, but may be selective or even aggressive when it comes to other animals and dogs. We looked deeper into it in ABOUT BREED.
